Abstract Using Chinese Family Panel Studies (CFPS) dataset, this paper tests the determination of willingness to trust others of adolescents aged from 15 to 22, assuming that they are shaped by the attitudes of parents and other characters. The main results of our study include: firstly, the effects of intergenerational transmission of trust attitude significantly exist, and an investigation of underlying mechanisms shows that “direct socialization” is more important in the transmission process than “indirect socialization”. Secondly, trust attitudes of parents have a higher probability of intergenerational transmission than distrust attitudes of parents. Thirdly, school education and social environment has significant influence on the formation of adolescent’s social trust, and the role of school education is proved as important as that of parents. Finally, the positive assortative mating of parents enhances the effects of the trust attitudes of parents to pass on his or her attitudes to their children. Results based on the instrumental variable regression are proved robust.
