AbstractOpium and machine-made piece goods were the two foreign goods imported in late Qing Dynasty. In the 1860s, the influence of importing opium and machine-made piece goods on Chinese economy mainly reflected on the influence they brought to the consumption of the residents. This paper gives an economic chain which will play an important role in the empirical analysis. Opium importing has a significant impact on the conversion of domestic funds into industry investment, if coupled with the consumption of machine-made piece goods, the total number is estimated at about 60398259 guan liang annually, which is equal to the 74.55% of the Qing government’s fiscal revenue. Normal import value and very import value are two distinguished concepts in this paper, and the influence of importing opium and machine-made piece goods will be estimated in the grand framework of trade balance.
