AbstractThis paper examines the dynamics of industrial structure across regions in China during the period of 1980-2006. It is found that the interplay between local market size and external trade linkage shapes regional industrial structure: the former diversifies regional industrial structure while the latter allows regions to be more specialized. This paper also presents the evidence that local government’s intervention in economic activities discourages regional specialization by building up interregional trade barriers. The results in this paper confirm the importance of the regional integration and less local protectionism in driving regional development and the division of labors across regions in China.
